About Mandarin Chinese
The Mandarin language is the most widely spoken language in the world, with 885 million native speakers. It is by far the largest form of Chinese spoken in China. In point of fact, Mandarin is actually a dialect of Chinese, but because of the sheer volume of speakers, it is often considered to be a language in and of itself. The word “mandarin” literally means “speech of officials,” a term that is fitting to its place in the world today. While Mandarin is an ancient language, dating back to the Yuan Dynasty in the 12th Century, it has only recently become an internationally important language, with China becoming a major economic and political force in the world. Mandarin is the official language spoken by the Chinese government. The Mandarin language can be challenging to learn for a speaker of English. The writing system of the language uses a completely different alphabet, comprised of a series of calligraphy-like symbols that bear no resemblance to the English system. In addition, a student of Mandarin must also learn Mandarin vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, syntax, conjugation, word order, and expressions. Although some college and Universities in Europe and America offer courses in Mandarin, hiring a tutor can be a great benefit to mastering the language.
